This is a quick guide on how to replace the fake "laser sight" On your firestrike with a 140 lumen tactical light. It keeps the blaster looking completely clean and stock, but adds a useful new capability.  I have actually taken to using it as a flashlight because it works so well.

This is a quick guide on how to replace the fake "laser sight" On your firestrike with a 140 lumen tactical light. It keeps the blaster looking completely clean and stock, but adds a useful new capability.  I have actually taken to using it as a flashlight because it works so well.

 

 

First, you need to buy the required LED parts

LED and Driver

Choose the Cree XP-G in cool-white and 350 mA of current

Optic

Optic Holder

 

I went with the pre-soldered kit because I am bad at soldering.  If you want to save a buck, buy the indus star Cree XPG and the 350 mA micro puck driver

Parts and shipping cost me just over 25 dollars.  A decent deal considering a regular flashlight with this much power usually costs upwards of 50 dollars. 

 

Next, on to modding!

  1. Take apart the firestrike.  Make sure to also remove the battery cover on the handle
  2. Remove the black “light-tube” Pinch the tabs on the back together to remove the circuit board with the red light.
  3. Cut the front of the light tube off just after the plastic inserts end (see the thin line between my fingers in the picture.  A small saw works best for this, but use your dremel if you want.)  You can throw out the front of the tube and the old lens if you want 
  4. I glued a small piece of aluminum foil over the now open end of the tube to reflect some light back into the plastic windows.    I’m not sure how much good it does, but it doesn’t hurt. 
  5. Solder the positive and negative leads from the LED driver onto the positive and negative terminals on the back of the red light circuit board.  This wires both lights in parallel and ensures that they will both glow with full brightness.  (You still can’t see the red light super clearly, but it doesn’t make a noticeable impact on the battery life.                                          
  6. Put the batteries back in and screw the battery holder on to test the circiut.  Make sure both LEDs glow (Red and high-power) when you pull the light-trigger
  7. Use a small amount of super glue to attach the optic holder onto the high power LED board.
  8. Snap the optic into the optic holder
  9. Wrap one layer of electrical tape around the LED assembly, making sure not to cover the optic on the front or the metal plate on the back.  This ensures a snug fit.
  10. Insert the LED assembly into the orange bit of the shell where the old lens was located.  A perfect fit!                                                                                             
  11. At this point, I also replaced the spring.  I left the AR in as the elite ARs don’t seem too harmful.  It was fairly straightforward and just required a lot of fiddling with the tabs holding the plunger head on the rod.  I used a random spring I found around the house (may have come from a toilet paper holder?)
  12. Put the internals back into the shell and tuck the wires away where they won’t interfere.  The light tube is slightly askew in my picture below, but you get the point.   
  13. Put the shell back together
  14. Enjoy your new tactical light!

Be aware that this is bright and will probably temporarily blind other nerfers in low light.  If that’s what you want then go for it.  But I doubt your friends will be happy.
